Well, when I go to NYC, I want great pizza and Jewish Delis.  Heck, I can get great Thai and sushi nearly every place I go!

Well I disagree some parts of the country have have better Thai and Sushi restaurants than others. 

You may want Jewish Deli’s when visiting NY, so does every other tourist, but you’re not “eating like a local” 

Same thing here in RI, many tourists reach out for the pizza strips and hot wieners, as a local, I’ll stick to a good burger stellar cerviche and some of the best Hmong and Dominican food in the country
