yes, my mother used to use it on the rare occasions that she was out of schmaltz (= chicken fat fried in onions and rendered). It will give a very rich taste when used in preparation of a variety of dishes — rice or grains (kasha, for example), or to saute meat that you are then going to cook slowly like pot roast, or chicken in a pot.
