Sixty miles south of Red Wing, my home town of Winona MN has a great bakery I’m sure you will like. Bloedow’s (rhymes with Play-Dough) has been there since the 1920’s and has been owned by one family until a couple years ago, when it was sold to another, who is keeping up the tradition. They put Krispy Kreme to shame, twice the doughnut at half the price. Everything they make is good, but some must-trys are the raised glazed, raised sugared, and the maple long john. (My wife’s great disappointment is that the new owner has discontinued the pineapple danish.)
They don’t use a lot of preservatives, so everything is best the first day, and extra best if you get them early while still warm! They are somewhat more dry the next morning, but I don’t think that stops anyone from eating them.
They bill themselves as "The little bakeshop on Broadway." Broadway is sixth street, meaning it is six blocks from the Mississippi. They are on the east side of town, at Broadway and Laird. Anyone you ask can tell you. Down Broadway a few blocks is a Kwik Trip to grab some coffee, and a short drive to Lake Park is a nice spot to enjoy the infusion of sugar.
I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your pictures and trips. You and John A and James Bond are true inspirations. And I like when your photos include scenes of your back yard — you live in a beautiful place!
