Hey all, I am new here. I currently live in Minnesota, but lived for several years in St Jo/KC. Don’t forget about Barbosas on 9th in St Jo. Excellent Mexican food and a pretty cool house-turned-restaurant making for great atmosphere.
First off, welcome to Roadfood manzke!
Second, let me say that while we have enjoyed our visits to Barbosa’s over the years, I’m always a bit reluctant to recommend it to others. The food is good but not great, IMHO, and a bit overpriced for that genre. Although dining in that very cool old mansion makes it worth the experience, even if it is just one time.
For really great Mexican food in St. Joseph, that is more reasonably priced and in a less upscale environment, head over to La Mesa, 3730 Mitchell Avenue, (816) 232-5853. We go there almost every time we’re in town and have yet to be disappointed.
When we visited last Christmas I ordered the cheese enchiladas with shredded pork. The dish is normally served with a red salsa but I requested a salsa verde instead. Holy mackerel, what an amazing difference that made. I had learned from various Mexican restaurateurs here in Chicago that salsa verde is the preferred salsa when your meat ingredient is pork. Boy oh boy are they right. The tanginess of the tomatilla balances off the sweetness of the pork perfectly. The cheese in the enchiladas was impossibly creamy and quite delicious. The dish was brightly flavored, rich, and satisfying.
Even the little side salad of shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes and guacamole was a stand out from the norm. My margarita was very tasty and contained a quantifiable amount of actual booze! Great service to boot. And the decor is quite lovely. The backs of the booths are all painted with colorful scenes from Mexico in the style of the great muralist Diego Rivera.
All in all it was an excellent meal and a fine experience. Check ’em out next time you visit back home, you won’t be sorry and you won’t miss Barbosa’s.
Keep on posting manzke, I look forward to reading more of your recs!
