I agree, Katz’s is the best Deli experience in NYC. But there’s a routine there that is helpful to know. When you walk in you will be given a ticket. Each time you order something you give the ticket to the employee serving you and he writes down the price. There are separate counters for hot dogs, sandwiches, fries and sodas. You can be waited on at your table if you sit against the wall. The tables in the middle are for self serve seating. The best experience is to wait in one of the lines at the sandwich counter and then ask the sandwichmeister what’s good. Let him see you put a buck in the tip tray on the counter and then you will be treated to sample slices of corned beef, pastrami, brisket, or whatever else you would like to try. The club rolls are especially good. Then when you leave you give the ticket to the cashier. Don’t lose your ticket. And don’t forget to send a salami to your boy in the Army.
