I cannot recommend a specific place (it’s been too long since I’ve been there, pre 9/11)–maybe others can–but I urge you to get a bagel with lox and cream cheese somewhere in Manhattan. Compared to what you get elsewhere (except maybe certain parts of Miami Beach), they are marvelous. None of this "smear" stuff with bits of lox mixed into the cream cheese–a great bagel, real hunks of fish, good bermuda onion–YUM!
Then, go somewhere in the Greenwich Village area or Little Italy and look for a place–preferably a sidewalk place–selling Italian sausage/onions/peppers on a roll. {{DROOL}}
New York, for me, is a bimodal experience. The upper end food is unbeatable anywhere in the world, but since I can’t afford much of that, I gravitate toward the opposite end of the spectrum–streetfood and inexpensive takeout type items, including hot dogs. In general, New York’s blue collar working people really know how to eat so I try to eat where and like they eat.
