Is Mae’s Whiz All Around still there over on West Market Street? It was an amazing all-night neighborhood eatery when I found it back in 1986. It was run by three white hillbilly sisters from Cub Run, Kentucky, although it was in what had morphed into the middle of the ghetto. There was a Mae, and she lived right across the street.
Their menu included mostly "normal" items, but one oddity was their Floating Pig. It was a fish sandwich with bacon on it, and – good golly, Miss Molly – was it good!
Mae’s surely ranks as one of the top ten of Ort.’s All-Time Roadfood Favorites. There was a near-mystical Zen to the place; a homicide detective and I talked for two hours about all sorts of things there, then his radio barked and he calmly said "You’ll have to excuse me, Ort. – I’ve gotta go investigate a splatter job." And off he went. "He’ll be back directly to pay his ticket," the manager informed me. "We’re used to this." She spindled the check and went on back to work. Such things were routine to her, and to him….
Nostalgically, Ort. Carlton in Athens, Georgia.
