Since it is barely an hour’s ride from Louisville to French Lick, and another 30 minutes out to Jasper, eating on the road becomes sort of a mute point. However at each of the stops you have a couple of choices.
In the case of French Lick we have not visited the new Casino/Hotel since it opened, but have heard nice things about the food service. It is on our list of places to go when the time permits (We aren’t big on Casino stops anywhere). If you do stop there take a moment to drink in the history of the West Baden Spa that was such a wonderful draw for Chicago Society a hundred years ago.
Now the Jasper area has a few things to list. The Gasthaus Village in Montgomery is a touristy sort of Amish Village with a very good buffet type dinner hall.
The Black Buggy in Washington Indiana is another Amish Buffet restaurant.
We have enjoyed both, but prefer the Gasthaus Village as it isn’t quite so "cramped" as the Black Buggy is. Food in both places is good.
There is the Chicken Place in Ireland, Indiana just a few miles out of Jasper that several folks on this site have raved about. I will email the post also as it appears you won’t see this if I don’t.
Here is CORABETH’S post about the CHICKEN PLACE in IRELAND,IN
The Chicken Place in Ireland, Indiana has the very best fried chicken livers, also great gizzards & wonderful fried chicken. The coating is crisp without being too hard & the livers are smooth & cramy on the inside. Most folks get an order of livers & gizzards as an appetizer & fried chicken for the main course. Also, don’t miss the german potatoes, fried potatoes with onions.
Ireland is just west of Jasper, Indiana in the southwestern part of the state. This part of Indiana has a strong german heritage & Jasper has a great german restaurant.
If you want a country-meal closer to Louisville, Try Huber’s Family Farm Restaurant in Starlight Indiana. It is about 30 minutes N W of Louisville. You get there by following the signs off of U S 150–the road you take to French Lick. You can check their website for directions and info. www.joehubers.com/
That’s enough for now. Reaching out a bit further you can find some BBQ (Owensboro) and some more ethnic stuff if you want to take the time to drive a bit more.
