I hate to admit this but as Southern boy I prefer blue crab to lobster. A pound of cleaned blue crab is on sale for $10 at Harris Teeter this week. Crab cakes, crab salad and gumbo are all on the menu…AND it is from Virginia…another state that stood fast against the assualt from the aggression of the north in the War of Northern Agression just those few years ago.
BTW lobster is usually of poor quality in the South, IMHO, but only 12-14 bucks a pound this week. I can buy two or three pounds of local shrimp that were netted in the last two days for what it would cost me for a lobster caught two weeks ago.
I eat lobster daily when in Boston and north of there but not more than once a year in the South. I still remember a sweet little old lady recommending a steak and lobster house just outside of Peabody, MA. as the largest steakhouse in America. She said "order the lobster bake w/ NO bread crumbs…they put in more lobster!" She was right.
