We have a Stroud’s down here in Wichita KS that’s in a converted barn — rustic to be sure! The first time I ate there I could somehow still detect the earthy smell of long-departed livestock. Didn’t put me off my meal, just an interesting atmospheric touch. The chicken is always incredible, and I always get my salad with the creamy blue cheese dressing, then pay extra for the blue cheese crumbles.
The only fried chicken I’ve had when visiting KC was at a departed chain called Po’ Folks, which has gone from several dozen locations back to 6 or 7 in the southeast. They had really great chicken and biscuits, some really tasty side dishes, and sweet tea in the Mason jars — kitschy to be sure, but I ate there every time I was in town.
