There are a number of airports pilots hate flying into, JFK and Reagan National to name two. Most airports in use today were designed for prop airplanes or early jetcraft, i.e. short runways, etc. Traffic patterns have been restricted due to noise abatement and populated areas. Also, there are restrictions due to 9-11 which do not permit flying in certain areas, which then make the traffic patterns more congested – everybody trying to get into the same places with narrowing lanes of travel. Even with all the computers, etc. ATC’s earn their keep.
