you’d be surprised at how many dives did pay their ASCAP fee. The ASCAP fees are not all that high. $750/yr or a $1000 – that’s today. Not 20 years ago. Every area has a representative. When a bar opens, they show up. When a place advertizes their performances, they show up, when a new business opens, they show up. They were really hard core in the 80’s. Relaxed in the early 90’s, and in the late 90’s to now, they are pretty vigilant. Although, sometimes, they miss a place here and there. The area representative is pretty busy. Since ASCAP is a non-profit organization, the areas are large – one guy for an entire metro area.
