If you are passing through western Iowa, you really need to try a breaded pork tenderloin, one of those indigenous foods that you don’t find anywhere else except Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.
After you pass through Des Moines headed east, you’ll approach Iowa’s Pork Tenderloin epicenter, where practically every drive-inn and main street restaurant offers a carefully prepared, handbreaded tenderloin.
Most of the restaurants close on Sundays so beware. I got the above BPT at the Countryview Drive-Inn in Kimballton, which is about ten miles north of the interstate. There are good BPT places in Atlantic (Farmer’s Kitchen), Exira (the Red Barn), Hamlin (Darrell’s), Elk Horn (Larson’s Catering) and many other places. Check out the tenderloin thread in the Sandwich area elsewhere on this board.
I took the above photo with my IPhone while driving the backroads of western Iowa in late April, 2008.
