Dear long–Caffe Sport can be a lot of fun for a group of diners but out of the 3000 or so restaurants in SF alone (and thousands more in the rest of the Bay Area), it’s quite possible for a reasonable person to pick 100 (s)he likes better. How many of those thousands have YOU tried? ‘Cause I’m just gonna guess the Chronicle’s food critic has tried more than you have.
I’ve lived in SF for 24 years and I’ve eaten at Caffe Sport exactly once. I went there with a group of folks from work, we all got a little looped, the waiters appropriately insulted the women (that’s considered part of the fun) and it was a great night. But I said to myself, "I don’t think I’d like this place all that much if I were dining by myself or with one other person" which is why I haven’t been back. There are just too many other places to eat and I think you almost have to be an out-of-town conventioneer or, at least, with a large party, to enjoy Caffe Sport to the fullest. And truth be told, I thought I had read it had closed (last time I was at the corner of Columbus and Green I looked over there and didn’t see their sign, but I do see current reviews at local Bay Area restaurant sites so I’m not sure of its status now.
Still I do think it’s a little presumptuous for someone from 3000 miles away to decide THE restaurant in SF that defines a serious list of the best available.
