Here are some ideas:

Greenville, SC – Henry’s Smokehouse has some of the best BBQ you’ll find anywhere – an old-fashioned log burner, every bit as good as Lexington #1. It’s close to downtown Greenville – get good directions as there is a lot of road construction going on in that area which has changed traffic patterns

Gastonia, NC – hit one of the fish camps on S. New Hope Road. I can recommend Twin Tops but I haven’t been to the others.

Charlotte – El Loco Pollo on Eastway and Central (in the large shopping center) serves Peruvian cuisine with a Chinese twist. A unique spot. Don’t miss the chicken soup flavored with cilantro – I forget what it’s called but it is a pale green color.

Lexington, NC – I think the only BBQ place open in Lexington on Sunday’s is Jimmy’s. It’s right off I-85 or route 8.
