Big Ugly Mich
If it’s canned, I don’t worry. If it’s milk or bread, I do. I buy stuff cheap when it expires and chow down on it. Here (SE Wisconsin-suburban Chicago area), we have stores that sell bread that’s two or three days expired and a few staples that I love to shop at because
I’m they’re so cheap. They also sell Twinkies and the like cheap, but you usually buy that sort of thing and eat it right away, so if they’re less than a week expired, I don’t worry.
If it’s canned, the condition of the can is a dead on indicator of the condition of the food, or I’ve been lied to for most of my life. I NEVER buy a dented can, but never check the dates either. Frozen foods last for months, unless I’ve been lied to again, so I’ll look but not worry if it’s a month or so past.
