I recall going to the butcher shop with my Mother in Gardena California (Crenshaw and 154th)…must have been the late 40’s as I was only 3 when WWII ended. They had roasts, steaks, and ground horse meat as well as the usual beef,pork, etc. I don’t recall the flavor of the end product, but I remember my parents having burgers (meat patties) for dinner with a lot of grilled (or fried)onions ‘smothering’ the meat. I also recall her buying a large roast for a special dinner with visiting relatives. At the time there wasn’t any social-stigma about consumming ‘Horsemeat’. Mother was quite sensitive to any comments about her kitchen activities, so If their were negative comments about the Horsemeat, we would have known about it.
