I wrote a business plan for a hot dog cart about 15 years ago. It was sort of a plan for something to do in retirement.
As fate would have it, I was laid of from a well paying IT position about a year and a half ago. I put the business plan into place and purchased a nice used cart a week after the job loss.
The first year was definitely a learning experience and I picked up some IT consulting gigs to make ends meet.
I picked up a hot dog shaped cart, changed the menu around and have done well this year. I added wild game sausages with artisan mustard’s and pulled pork tacos and that’s when business started to take off. This is really hard work, but it’s starting to pay off. In fact, we’re booked every weekend in August. We tried the Lowe’s thing and it wasn’t really worth the time. Special events and bookings for private events is where the money is.
Here’s a pic of the cart setup at Lowe’s for a sale event earlier this year. We do still work with them, but only for special events.
