I’m not here to get into the heritage of a Michigan Hot Dog (or Michigan Red Hot), but here in the far northeastern corner of NY State we have always called them Michigan Hot Dogs/Michigan Red Hots or once in a while Texas Red Hots. We were always told that the name originated because a woman from Michigan brought the recipe for the sauce here to the Champlain Valley back in the 1920’s or 1930’s. I’ve had Chili Dogs in a few other places around the country and, while they are similar, they are not the same. Gus’s Red Hots are very good as are most of the others, but the best of all in this area come from a seasonal hole-in-the wall place called Clare and Carl’s on Route 9 just south of the Plattsburgh City line and not far from Clinton Community College.
I don’t get there too often in season, probably no more than 4 or 5 times each week for lunch and/or dinner!
When I was an undergrad at Cornell in the 60’s the local specialty at many of Ithaca’s diner-type places was a bo burger. I know there are more recent Cornell Alums on this list, were bo burgers still known in Ithaca in the 70’s or 80’s?
