Well I had 5 to contribute but after reading Beer&Snausages post I was feeling so inadequate all I could do was go to the store and buy a couple of half gallons of Blue Bell to make myself feel better.
I had never heard that Athens, TX, was the black-eyed pea capital, nor that Port Isabel claimed to be the Shrimp Capital. I’m thinking Veracruz might dispute the latter.
Brady, TX, has been the home of a World Championship BBQ Goat cookoff every Labor Day weekend for years and I thought they claimed to be the Goat BBQ Capital because of that, but I can’t find that mentioned anywhere on line.
Cuero, TX, has long been the center of the turkey industry in TX and (according to Wikipedia) ‘unofficially’ claims to be the Turkey Capital of the World. Each year for years they held a competition against another city, I think it was Rochester, Minnesota, which involved racing turkeys. The Cuero entry was always named Ruby Begonia. I can’t recall having seen any news stories about that in recent years.
Here’s a couple more that aren’t ‘world’ capitals: Lockhart – BBQ capital of Texas; Elgin – Sausage capital of Texas; Poteet – Strawberry capital of Texas (I think).
fpczyz – love your contributions to the list [:)]
