It’s true that stuff usually costs more at the destination, like at the beach. If you are interested in buying gear, another option might be to invest in a telephone call to the pier and ask their advice and get some specifics, and then buy somewhere like Walmart, or online. It doesn’t look like the pier sells gear, so it would not be too unethical to take info from them.
Whether you rent or use their advice to buy, you can be pretty sure you have the right equipment. Their reputation is at stake, and they want you to catch fish, and they want other people to see you catching fish.
