Flying fish are delicious eating- but not a whole lot of meat on the fish. When i was a working seaman, I spent most of one winter in the Caribbean and some mornings we could pick up dozens of flying fish that had landed on the deck overnight. In choppy windy seas they can fly a long ways and get pretty high out of the water. If one was nice to the cooks, like a pack or two of cigarettes or a bottle of cheap rum, they would pan fry the flying fish for us – they were delicious. But the most memorable flying fish feast was in the waterfront Star Hotel in Bridgetown Barbados where we had flying fish stuffed with very very hot peppers to accompany our slightly cooled British beers and greasy chips with vinegar. We watched the fish being delivered to the hotel cooks through a large window from a boat in the harbor- that’s how fresh they were.

We always heard they were really oily, so I never tried them. And they usually avoid the harbor, so they didn’t jump on our boat and no way can you get kids to intentionally kill something so magical looking. I mean, other than those delicious unicorn steaks we used to enjoy.
