The Butternuts I recall are either a brand of coffee or a local bread bakery.

I was checking THE CHOCOLATE CHRONICLES by Ray Broekel. No reference to a Butternut candy bar but I did find a "Butter-Smack" bar made by the Hoffman Candy Co of LA in the ’30s.
