Me! I’m type II, diagnosed five years ago.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. I, at first thought it was my own dang fault. There was a commercial out at the time with Klinger (remember, from MASH?) and he was sitting with a huge bowl of melted chocolate. I forget how the commercial went but it had something to do with Diabetes. I thought I had used up my lifetime of sugar/sweets.
Turns out some of us have a family history.[:I] We’re destined. If a person’s lucky and gets forwarning they can put it off with diet and excercise. But even the ones who are warned usually get it within 5 years.
Have you been to diabetes education classes? You’ll find out that it’s really about the carbs. Carbs turn into sugar. I had to end my love affair with all things bread and just see it occaisionally! I think I fell into a depression at first. But I realized, hey, it wasn’t cancer! I could live with it!
I have friends with other dietary restrictions. My BIL with diverticulosis says he would trade me! Another friend has celiac disease (I probably spelled it wrong; she can’t have gluten or flour products) I think she would trade me too. It has taught me moderation. Hang in there.
P.S. When this first happened I had to have a toffee candy bar in my desk drawer "just in case" I had a bad craving for something naughty! Just knowing it was there made me feel better. Hope this helps.
