I’ve only had a couple of diet sodas in 49 years.  The first time I ever drank a diet soda was in the summer of 1966.  It was Diet-Rite Cola, made by Royal Crown Cola (RC).  I might as well have swallowed gorilla urine.  It was dreadful.  The taste was so bad that to this day I can still taste it.  And except for two other times I have stayed away from diet anything.

Out of curiosity, I sampled a Diet Coke back around 1982 and another Coca-Cola product a couple of years ago.  Those were not good, but they didn’t have the tongue-rotting experience of Diet-Rite Cola.

Gee, why have the death penalty when a couple of swallows of Diet-Rite Cola is the perfect substitute?
