Old downtown Boise is very cool! Lots of the old buildings are being refurbished and there is a vibrant restaurant scene. We had dinner at a locally owned place called the Milky Way. It was very good!
There are several Basque places. Gernika is more of a bar, when we were there this summer there were only a few Basque items on the menu. Across the street is the Basque Market and next to that is Leku Ona, a Basque restaurant with a much more extensive menu than Gernika. The Basque Museum is very interesting and is in the same block, which appropriately enough is called the Basque block.
There are your usual chain places, PF Changs, etc, but all you have to do is walk around the very interesting downtown area and you will see all sorts of coffee shops, cafes and wine bars, all locally owned. We stayed at the Hampton Inn, which was great and walked around the entire downtown area with ease. There were lots of people, live music in the park and an art fair when we were there. Boise was a very pleasant surprise to us! We had a great time.
