When I was in my early 20s, I was taken to a ritzy benefit with celebrity bartenders. Shelly Winters, who is quite a pistol, was extolling her fabulous martinis. So I ordered one. She poured vodka in a glass and handed it to me, fixing me with an amused stare. I thought there must be more to a martini than that, but I had read her autobiography and knew she was not one to be tangled with.
