We were in Torrington today volunteering for a charity event, and missed the open hours at Carbone’s, so we headed over to Salerno’s Import and Deli for a couple of sandwiches to take home. It’s on a busy corner across from the police station, with parking in the back of the store.
There’s a counter to order, and another room with 10 or 12 tables if you want to eat in. They offer a huge selection “named “sandwiches, and also build your own options. We had a choice of roll, panini, “soft” grinder, or italian grinder. We went with the italian bread option.
The sizes were large – fork for scale –
I ordered the “Godfather” – proscuitto, capicola, proscuittini, provolone, stuffed cherry peppers, and “the works”. “The Works” includes lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, mustard, oil & vinegar, hot sauce, salt & pepper, and spices. I adjusted the Godfather to remove the stuffed cherry peppers, mayo, mustard, and hot sauce – too many things going on at once for my taste buds.
And inside –
The amount of meat doesn’t compare to Carbone’s, but this was a nice selection, good quality, and plenty for me for a sandwich. Shredded lettuce (my preference), good fresh tomato slices, and the onions were sweet, and sliced very, very thin. The downside to this was the bread; perhaps because it’s Sunday, and they don’t get a fresh bread delivery it might be better during the week, but this bread was stale, to the point that the ends of the bread were really hard, and the top flaked away when you held it. Very disappointing. I never get mayo on an italian sandwich, but the bread could have used that extra moisture. I avoided the “soft” grinder roll thinking it was probably the same generic white bread rolls you see everywhere, but that may have been a better choice on this day.
Tim opted for the Bada Bing – chicken stuffed with mozzarella, roasted peppers, and marinara.
And inside –
Again – the same issue with the stale bread; the cutlet was good, the sauce flavorful, but the bread just didn’t work.
I really want to like this place, but would need to try again with a different bread option, or ensure what we are getting is fresh.
