I didn’t even know the names of most of the stores. But my favorite growing up was Marchitto’s on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden — about half a mile from Hamden High School. Charley Marchitto’s mother made the subs to order, starting by cutting a loaf of Italian bread in half and then opening it up and building the sub. If you’re interested in good kielbasa, stop at Walt’s Food Market on Main street in the center of Old Saybrook.
