Ok, so I lied – I ended up having one more different grinder before my Carbone’s marathon, and it’s actually the first place I tried when I moved here: Zerio’s in Cromwell.
At the far left of the counter, you can just make out a whole pizza from which they offer customers free slices. There seems something decidedly old-school about that to me.
I went for a steak and cheese grinder, adding peppers and onions:
It was everything that kind of sandwich should be, and far better than one I’d had from Nardelli’s awhile back. (Zerio’s cooks the steak to order, while Nardelli’s microwaves precooked refrigerated blocks.) The bread was as good as it looks.
When I previously lived near the edge of Cromwell, Zerio’s impressed me with their calzones, chicken parm, and pizza. Some places do just one or two things well and phone the rest in, but Zerio’s was good across the board. I was pleased to see that they haven’t changed!
