a Purple Runza, is a runza that Roossy made once. She had gotten the recipe from another poster and was very excited to make it. At some point, she decided to make an ingredient switch. She opted for red cabbage instead of regular cabbage. (leftovers from St. Patty’s Day). Due to the red cabbage, the insides turned completely purple. She was kind enough to post her debacle on this site. (though, apparently, it didn’t affect the taste at all) She has since made runzas that weren’t purple. The error, though, has been a running joke on this board ever since. All in fun, of course. From time to time, even Roossy herself will bring it up. There’s probably someone out there making purple runzas just because we now know the ingredient to make a perfectly good runza turn purple.
here’s the thread where she learned about Runzas: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6394&SearchTerms=runza
here’s the infamous purple runza thread, which doesn’t make reference to the odd color initially. Roossy acknowledges her mistake, but the long running joke may be because of Pwingsx’s comments on how blue it looked. Roossy admits it was actually a deep purple. It doesn’t actually become a running joke right away. That happened over time when the purple runza got referred to, but here is the origin: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11997
Oddly enough, the whole thing started in a CHILI forum. go figgur!
