Burnt My Fingers
When I lived in LA I used to get Almond Duck from Wah’s Golden Hen on Virgil (Silverlake/East Hollywood area). It was crispy in a sweet and sour sauce with shreds of lettuce and really good. I lived in SF for awhile and never saw it until there was a thread (I think on Chowhound) that directed me to Jade Palace in Daly City as the only place serving it. It was not good at all, flabby and tasteless in that anonymous brown gravy. Jade Palace is in general a depressing experience, with almost exclusively Caucasian diners in a room that’s seen better days. Now I live in the remote environs of Saratoga Springs, NY and have seen it on a menu for a takeout place, Tasty Chinese in Malta. Am going to try it and keep my fingers crossed. UPDATE: did try it, and it was definitely pressed duck. Didn’t like the prep overall as much as Wah’s Golden Hen, but my memory of that has probably elevated it in the 20 plus years since I tasted it last.
