I’ve tried dozens of brands of frankfurters, and can speak with some knowledge about them. As for bratwurst, I started eating them about 3 or 4 years ago. I order the excellent all beef Certified Angus Franks from Usinger’s. When ordering, there is a minimum of 6 pounds you must purchase. I asked the woman on the phone what else they sell that is good, because I didn’t want to confine all 6 pounds to hot dogs. She suggested that I try the bratwurst which is considered among the best in the country. They have many kinds like Howard mentioned, but I ordered the pork and veal. Excellent!

I’ve since tried a number of commercial brands and a few from some local German butchers. One German butcher (Fritz’s in Union, N.J.) makes brats as good as Usinger’s. I’ve since found a place that makes brats that are even better. A guy I know from Pennsylvania (an ex Jerseyite) is a bratwurst fanatic. He’s tried as many brands of bratwurst as I’ve tried hot dogs. He even had bratwurst all over Germany. He said the best bratwurst that he’s had in this country, and better even than many German brats comes from the Union Pork Store in Union, N.J. This place is about 2 miles from my home. I tried some, and have been buying them exclusively ever since. Simply the best brats you will find. I’ve done taste tests and their brats are far superior. I would suggest the veal and pork brats. They also have pork, beef and pork, and all veal (weisswurst).

The guy I mentioned earlier used to make the trip into N.J. to buy these brats to serve at his parties.
