Rick: I’ll take an ill-informed stab at the meaning of "brat" in bratwurst.
"Braten" is a German term for roasted or braised meat of any kind.
My guess is that bratwurst is made from precooked pork, as opposed to some other wursts that are made from raw meat and cooked in their casing. Of course, I might be all wrong…
