I have been in four different Woodman’s (Rockforld, IL, Kenosha, WI, Janesville, WI, Madison, WI) including two that are approximately 240,000 square feet each and, I believe, larger than Jungle Jim’s until it finishes it’s current expansion. I don’t like Woodman’s-low ceilings, no specialty areas, almost a warehouse club type of set up with 25 registers per store and an emphasis on volume.
I went to the Woodman’s here in La Crosse, WI last Saturday night and found a few pleasant surprises. I normally go there just to stock up on a few items I can’t get elsewhere. The meat and seafood department was still nothing to write home about, but the selection of ethnic and international foods had been hugely expanded. I’ll probably go back a bit more often, now. I’m betting that this was inspired by the opening of a huge new Super Wal-Mart virtually across the street from Woodman’s. They can’t compete on the volume/price model so they’re attempting something different.
