My problem is that while Trader Joe’s has excellent quality and good prices on many staples, I can’t do all my shopping there: the produce is uniformly lousy and they have no fresh meat.

In CA, TJ’s does have fresh meat (pre-packaged–but some of it "organic" and some of the chicken "free range") and the produce, while no great bargain, is OK (not great). Refusing to pay $.59/lemon at Safeway, I sometimes buy ’em, as well at onions, potatoes and such, at TJ’s though you have to be careful not to get a rotten one (that seems to be true of bagged citrus anywhere).
