Well, I am from South Carolina, so it is certainly available in the chain grocery stores down here !! And yes it is called fatback.

Not sure about fresh side. If it is fatty bacon, then it might be what we call streak-of-lean down here. Mostly fat, but some meat mixed in. Like fatback but not quite !
