If you’ve the time for a drive, go to Lockhart TX and go to Kreuz’s. Not only is it delicious, but it’s an experience.
It’s in this huge red building that looks like a feed store from the outside and the parking lot was full of pickups. Inside you go straight back to a counter & tell them the cut/sort of meat you want. The fire is just behind the counter. It’s a dry BBQ as I recall. We got a slab of brisket and some sausages. They put them on a sheet of white butcher paper, on a tray. That’s all the plate you ever get. Then you go into this little (only in comparison, cause its not little) room and get in line for sides & drinks. Bunch of choices. If you choose something that requires a spoon, you get a plastic spoon, otherwise, no utensils. Make your choices, pay for the meal. Go find a table. There’s a big roll of papertowels attached to the table. Eat some of the best BBQ I’ve EVER tasted, with your fingers. Use lots of paper towels. And people watch. Lots of locals there talking farming & trucks. All very nice folks.
There was too much to eat so we wrapped it up and brought it on down to San Antonio with us. It was still good cold, in a motel room the next day.
If you get the chance, go there. It’s worth it. (btw, it’s not remotely expensive.)
