The main reason the Granny Smith’s seem to have replaced the Lodi in the national market is it’s shipping qualities. It doesn’t bruise as easily as the Lodi. A lot of Granny Smiths come to the USA from New Zealand in the off-season here.
I have two Rome Beauties, they make the greatest Baked Apples I can remember.
Red Delicious does look good, and has a short "shelf-life" as far as flavor goes, but it is a great pollinator for many other varieties, so I have two in the middle of my other apples. I too like the Golden delicious and it’s cousin the Jon-A-Gold.
Mac’s and Cortlands need more cool weather than we get this far south. But for Storage the Arkansas Black is a dandy, and a large producer too.
