Good morning, Bill,
You are correct in your assessment of Hilton Head, but there are a few good restaurants to be found. (Not many, but a few.) I recommend Harold’s Diner for lunch, and I’m told the breakfasts are excellent. Gruby’s Deli is wonderful, and when it’s open for the season, Coligny Deli and Ice Cream should be visited. My husband was thrilled to discover Coligny Deli made Frito Pies, something he hadn’t seen since living in Arizona. Both Harold’s and Gruby’s are right off Hwy. 278 – Harold’s is near Shelter Cove Mall, and Gruby’s is in the Fresh Market Shopping Center, not far from Sea Pines.
If you come to Beaufort, we have more Roadfood restaurants. For BBQ and soul food, eat at Sgt. White’s Diner. LT’s on Lady’s Island offers good soul food, Blackstone’s is good for lunch and dinner, and Boundary Street Pizza offers big (and cheap) breakfasts and a wonderful lunch menu. In Port Royal, there’s Old School Pizza, which offers homemade pasta dishes, sandwiches, New York Style pizza, calzones and strombolis.
Have a safe trip! Right now, it’s about 75 here, and not predicted to get cold anytime soon….
