Similar response to the Kansas City choices. Both Gates and Bryant’s put out a few quality items, but Ribs are not necessarily among the standouts. And I’ve never been a fan of Joe’s KC (formerly Oklahoma Joe’s). Not bad ‘Que, mind you, but I’ve never understood what all the fuss was about. Not KC’s best BBQ by any measurement.
And as long as I’m at it, a little home town irritation: Not a single Chicago Smokehouse mentioned?!? Nothing downstate either??? We’ve got a BBQ renaissance going on right now with some outstanding food being created by some brilliant Pitmasters. Smoque, Lillie’s Q, and Barn & Co. are just a few of the new school operations serving excellent smoked meats. Then there’s the old school joints on the south side like Lem’s, Uncle John’s, and Honey 1. On top of those, there are dozens of BBQ Shacks down in southern Illinois that serving ‘Que comparable to anything coming out of the Carolinas and other points south of the Mason Dixon Line.
chickenplucker called it, America is a big place, and 35 just skims the surface.
