Ok friends, here is the deal. As many of you know, I am not only a car racer but also a competitive Mountain (off road) Bike racer as well. I absolutely love the sport of Mountain Bike Racing but I have recently gotten some bad news from many differnt doctors and it looks like it is the beginning of the end of this sport for me. I won’t go into too much detail but unfortunately, I have learned in the last 6 weeks that I have some serious medical conditions that will be preventing me from competing (to win) in some of the sports I love like Mountain Bike Racing, Xterra, Triathlons and Road Cycling. Luckily my car racing won’t be effected because it is not considered an ultra endurance sport like the others. The doctors have told me that I CAN compete in these sports but I have come to the realization that winning it out of the question now with these medical conditions I have. Also, if I train hard like I have in previous years, things will get very bad.
So here is my dilemna. I have been invited to compete in the US Mountain Bike National Championships to be held at Mt. Snow, VT from July 16-20. In order to qualify for the National Championships, a racers has to win his/her class at one of the few national races held throughout the country each year. Last summer, before I was diagnosed with these "problems" I won two national races, one in Deer Valley, UT and another in Snowmass, CO. This is how I qualifying to be invited to the National Championships in VT.
Ok, so here is my question that I would like ask to my fellow Roadfooders…..Do I go or do I skip it? This will probably be the first, last and only time I will get invited to the National Championships. Not only that but I do NOT have a realistic chance of winning my class due to my medical problems. I have asked the doctor’s if I can go and their all seem to think it is ok but they are not happy about it. They have all left the decision up to me. I have asked of my family and friends and they are split down the middle. The race will not help my medical problems but it won’t seriously hurt it right now either. The problem comes if I continue racing these kinds of sports in the future.
So? Here I am asking my fellow "Foodies" do I go? The reason I am asking my friends here is because if I go, I will fly to Albany, NY and drive to Mt. Snow, VT hitting as many Roadfood joints as I can over the weekend. In other words, if I go you all will be with me [;)]
Yay or Nay?
