On my last trip to New Mexico I bought a few loaves of fresh native american bread (I think sometimes called Navaho bread). These are heavy round loaves straight from the horno (adobe beehive shaped oven found outside adobes on reservations). A fresh loaf costs about $5.00. We ate it on the way home in the car, but I was thinking it would make great sandwiches, French toast, etc. This is not the same as fry bread, however; it is sort of like sourdough and has a great earthy taste from the earth ovens.
They also always sell cookies and small pies also homemade. You can get them often where they sell "reservation gasoline" (lower/no tax) or out of trucks driven by Native Americans.
I was wondering if anyone has similar bread outside of New Mexico or other Indian tribes that make bread for sale.?
