For the past few years I’ve been taking my friend on road trips during my vacation. This year I planned a week long hot dog tour. Some ground rules were we’d have only one hot dog at each place and/or chili, maybe share some fries, unless we saw something interesting on the menu. Another ground rule was to not eat any place we’ve been before. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maine. I think I mentioned all the states there.
Stop #1 – The Hot Grill – Clifton, NJ
I had always wanted to go here, but have been to Rutt’s Hut a bunch of times. It was a beautiful day out. There’s plenty of parking and plenty of seating inside. It’s pretty big and seems to be always busy. It’s got an old retro feel to it. Lots of wood around.
The menu is pretty straight forward, hot dogs, fries, chili, etc. I didn’t really read much more, but from what I remember it’s not as extensive as other places. I don’t know what kind of dogs they used, but they were average size.. about the size of a Ball Park frank.
We got a few Texas Weiners (mustard, onions, and chili). The dogs were fried nicely. They were very messy and the chili wasn’t that great. It wasn’t spicy. I’ve been to a bunch of Texas Weiner places, but this didn’t remind me of a Texas Weiner style chili at all. Reminded me of regular chili more. I didn’t really care for it.
If I am up in the area, I’m going to stick with Rutt’s from now on, or try another place I’ve not been to before.
