What’s the ‘right’ way to eat mussels that’re still in the shell? Up until this past weekend I’d never eaten any bivalves that hadn’t been at least half-shucked…can you tell I’m a lifelong Midwesterner?[;)]
The shells were open enough for me to get my dinner fork inside and spear the meat, so that’s what I did; I held the mussel in 1 hand and used the fork with the other. Sometimes a little nub would be left behind when it pulled free of the shell and I just left those alone. No one screamed and pointed and none of the waitstaff fainted dead away, so I figure I wasn’t being too uncivilized…[8D]
As an aside, they were really good. $10 for a pound and there were 3 cooking options; I chose steamed in a white wine/garlic/herb sauce and could’ve probably polished off a 2nd order as they were technically on the appetizer menu.
