It has been so dark and gray,
And Winter wishes to give us
A last wet kiss before leaving.
Winter, that season, that lover,
That gives us such mixed blessing.
All the joyful gatherings and holy days
Can get lost in the stress of the
Strange tides of Winter weather.
All the burdens of dealing with Winter’s Moods
Can erase the beauty of a silent snow,
Of gathering round a warm fire with comforting souls.
The joys of seeing our winter friends Proud, hardy birds, a mouse in our cupboard, smoke from a chimney,
Have become an old and irritating reminders of the harness
Of unfilled rest, of tasks uncompleted, of dreams not realized.
While I lament that I did not appreciate
Winter to the full, and see what a bad lover have I been to Winter,
I await and dream of Spring’s coming,
And the Sweetness of Things To Come.
How was your Winter?
