Hepcat, six months after I started researching why this forum is broke, I now think the underlying reason is that the media company that bought this website has not been making any money from the forum section of it. The old software had two problems, 1) support for the software got prohibitively difficult, and 2) the hosting and storage charges for running the old software were high with no revenue to pay for these charges. Unindicted co-conspirators thought they could reduce costs by going to a free software package (bbPress) that looks about like this forum out of the box. Then, you have to pay software folks to customize it so it looks nice. Finally, whomever swung over the software blew the job. To be fair, very few third party software vendors know how to migrate messages from the old platform.
Then, there is the emergence of social media networks which siphoned off users.
