There are rumblings on FB about postponing the Crawl. Here’s what I just posted there:
I think the COV19 threat deserves its own thread. Michael suggested we cancel the Crawl, and someone else told me privately that might be a good idea. Someone else said unless he/she legally can’t, he/she is in.
We knew it was going to get worse before it got better, and we’re definitely in a bad time right now.
I’m not opposed to postponing it if warranted — I’m not one of those who is completely defiant about this threat by any means — but I still say we wait a couple of weeks and see where we are at that point.
Maybe I’m completely wrong but I’m cautiously optimistic things will be trending better at that point and we’ll be able to proceed.
There are three other reasons I think it’s premature to postpone at this point:
1) I don’t know how much money people have sunk into this venture and am really hesitant to potentially waste that. Boyd has booked a flight and I have no idea who else has prepaid for what. We can still cancel so we have no capital invested at this point, but I can’t speak for others.
2) The area businesses we’re going to support are seriously hurting and us spending money will really help them. I dread having to call/email 15-20 mom-and-pop restaurants and tell them we aren’t coming.
3) Once we postpone it’s going to be nearly impossible to walk that back if things so improve significantly in the next couple of weeks. If we make the call not to go, I owe it to the small businesses there to contact them immediately to give them the heads-up. There will be no going back at that point.
I will say if our numbers are severely diminished, I think we should postpone. It wouldn’t be a Crawl with six or eight people.
Making a decision around the end of the month still gives everyone plenty of time to cancel or confirm plans. If that’s enough time for me, having to contact all of these establishments and verify our count, then surely it’s enough for individuals to take care of their travel arrangements one way or another.
Just my $.02.
