I attempted to post present message #2200 several times last night. The first time, it went through. But, I noticed I forgot to change Monday to Tuesday in the manual date/time stamp. So, I hit the edit button, changed Monday to Tuesday, and resubmitted. The message went into the bit bucket. I waited a few more minutes, and resubmitted again. It also went into the bit bucket. I got up this morning, and cleared cookies. I submitted again, with a new date and time. It went into the bit bucket again. I cleared cookies again, then posted message #2199. It went through. I read that bbPress has a timer to prevent flooding the board. So, I waited 20 minutes, put a new date and time stamp on present message #2200, cleared cookies, logged out and in, and resubmitted. That time it posted, at 7:23 AM EDST today.
I can’t fault the Captcha picture thingy. While using Google to find other message boards still using some version of vNext, I found a few who were overrun with identical spam. I don’t know if they set up an account and sent the first message manually or automatically, but if you record a macro you can automatically hit that same board thousands of time automatically. The captcha stops that.
I have been posting all sorts of embarassing stuff for four days now. It’s still here, though I compose all messages in Notepad and cut and paste to the message board. “I have my transmission copy”, as we used to say back in the day. The messages are still here. I will ask the moderators to delete these posts if and when Fexy gets a usable forum up and running. Maybe we should count livestock and see if Elan is still there and working on one of the other Fexy properties.
When Stephen Rushmore, Jr. was running things, I got into a troubleshooting session with him at least once on this forum. I’m old school, and think the posting problems for the system itself can be solved if the admin person at Fexy is on the phone (hopefully one party has an unlimited telephone minutes plan) with a user in the field who is having trouble posting.
For now, I suggest the following boilerplate steps if you are having trouble posting. It’s the same stupid type of drill you hear from the telephone help desk when you have the computer problems, but tailored for Cloudflare/WordPress/bbPress:
1. Log out after finishing posting for the session.
2. Wait a few minutes before posting a second message if posting multiple messages. The exact number of minutes I can’t tell you, but it is the number they have configured into the bbPress software.
3. If your message did not post, clear cookies. Wait a few minutes. Log out, then in. Post a short message like my message number 2199, system message number 3030345.
4. Wait a few more minutes, then try again.
I also get that Jetpack or whatever name they call it screen that narrows the forum message menu. I have found that clicking one of the forum names or posts get me to a screen where I can again do things.
If we don’t hear from anybody at Fexy by the end of the week, I suggest lots of people call, email, or send a letter to the Fexy office in Mercer Island (Portland), directing them to the latest posts of this thread. Screenshots or HTML files, even.
I get that the Internet is not free, and it costs money for us to have chit-chats and bull sessions on a forum. Facebook is probably a better place for that type of stuff anyway. I’d go along with a “no bull session” policy. But if you are selling a message board catering to “devoted (Roadfood) fans” to advertisers, which you can put food and travel related ads on (assuming you had some software folks who could make it work), it should be working. Pizzamaking.com has ads on their message forum.
