On the Savannah River, North Augusta, South Carolina, is a dining destination for people from the city as well as from all over Aiken County. It’s got a charming downtown where you’ll find an old-time ice cream parlor and great drive-in burgers, including the SnoCap that still offers car hop service. It’s also the home of Sheila’s Baking Company, where beautiful, freshly made donuts often sell out before noon. To the east at the intersection of Atomic Road and Old Edgefield Road, there is a culinary bonanza of four worthy restaurants: the BBQ Barn; Purple Hull for meat-and-three lunch and weekend steak splurges; La Jalisciense for authentic Mexican food and groceries, and DeShawn’s Seafood & Chicken, which is famous for its beautiful crab legs. In North Augusta’s planned riverside community of Hammond’s Ferry, Manuel’s Bread Cafe is a favorite brunch spot with a notable repertoire of cakes for dessert. Its cousin is Hammond’s Ferry Larder, which has a do-it-yourself bloody Mary bar on Saturdays and an eclectic menu that ranges from tuna nachos and wings to flatbread pizza and Tuscan shrimp pasta.
